Negra Modelo is Vienna-style lager. It’s typically described as a Mexican beer with German roots. I didn’t really get that vibe sitting out in the fresh air swigging it. I did notice that it pours as caramel cola in color and is extraordinarily malty in smell.
The taste is dark and rich. This one boasts quite a hefty flavour and not one to be treated lightly. At 5.4% ABV the texture of the taste is noticeably thick, not quite chewy, but is also highly carbonated. It is a bag of biscuity malt just waiting to crumble.
Personally I’d say this one is too malty for this cowboy. While I’m complaining – I’m also not a fan of the dumpy 355ml bottle. Sure, beer comes in all shapes and sizes but so do preferences. I’d say fans of the style will totally adore it.
I did find it a great accompaniment to Armando iannucci’s Death Of Stalin.
